Beyond Transactions: How to Exchange Need-Driven Prayer for Face-to-Face Intimacy

Why does God reveal His character to some, but only His deeds to others??

The Ultimate Executive Validation

In the world of purposeful enterprise and C-Suite leadership, trust is currency. When a global authority validates a leader, it signals an unshakeable confidence in their character and competence.

Now, consider the validation given to Moses by the God of Heaven.

In Numbers 12:7-8, God issues the highest possible executive endorsement for a man:

“Of all my house, he is the one I trust. I speak to him face to face, clearly and not in riddles! He sees the Lord as He is.”

When God validates a man this way, it is great wisdom to stop and examine how that man lived to attract that level of validation. What was it about Moses that put him at this depth of intimacy—this face-to-face, riddle-free access with the Almighty?

The answer is found in one word: Priority.

The Priority Principle: Commitment vs. Convenience

If we examine God’s interactions with Moses, particularly in Numbers 32 and 33, we see a commitment to doing the will of God that went far beyond mere compliance. Even more than his commitment is the truth that Moses made God’s will his highest priority.

A man who truly fears God, even at his own inconvenience, would choose to be aligned with God’s will regardless of the personal cost. And make no mistake, personal costs are heavy.

This is the context that brings clarity to Psalm 103:7: God revealed His character to Moses and His deeds to the people of Israel.

The masses—the “people of Israel”—only saw God’s deeds (the plagues, the Red Sea, the provision of manna). Their relationship was driven by what God did for them. But Moses, the trusted leader, saw God’s character—He saw the Lord “as He is.”

The Tragedy of the Need-Driven Relationship

It is a sad day when a man realizes that everything about his relationship with God is based on answered prayers.

That kind of relationship is inherently need-driven and transactional. It says, “I will serve you, God, as long as you meet my payroll, solve my problems, and deliver my demands.” This is not a partnership; it’s a conditional contract. It prioritizes the deed (the provision) over the character (the Provider).

Those to whom God would reveal His character and secrets are those who, even when it may not pay them personally, will parameter their decisions by the standard of God’s Word. They choose alignment over advantage.

The Moses Test of True Priority

Moses stood this test in the most radical way. When Israel had sinned, God offered Moses the ultimate deal: He promised to destroy Israel and instead make a great people out of Moses—a fresh start, a personal dynasty (Exodus 32:10).

This was the opportunity of a lifetime—personal elevation, unchallenged authority. Yet, rather than jump at the offer, Moses stood his ground and interceded for God to show them mercy! He chose the will and glory of God over his own personal advancement.

Let me say it again: That we receive from God what we ask is not always the best assessor for our relational depth with Him.

The parameters and stakes for face-to-face intimacy are infinitely higher than transactional answered prayer.

The Parameters for God’s Trust

If you desire the status of Moses—if you want to be the one the God of Heaven trusts with His character, His secrets, and His highest counsel—then you must align your life with these non-negotiable parameters:

  • Unconditional Obedience: No caveats, no debate, no delay.
  • Absolute Integrity: Choosing God’s standard regardless of the cost.
  • Making Him our Priority: His glory over personal gain.
  • Knowing and Choosing His Will: Actively seeking the blueprint, not just the benefit.

Stop settling for a relationship where God’s activity is reduced to fulfilling your daily needs. Push past the deeds of God and press into the character of God. That is the realm where leaders are validated and legacies are designed.

Confession and Declaration:

Father, help me. May my relationship not be a need-driven and transactional one in the name of Jesus. Amen.
